Continuing in our journey to revisit the saga of Lord Krishna, let us today study closely this verse from the great Bhagavad Gita.

अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम |
नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते ||

Chapter 1, verse 7:

O best of Brahmins, hear too about the principal generals on our side, who are especially qualified to lead. These I now recount unto you.

Commentary:

Dronacharya was the commander in chief of the Kaurava army and Duryodhan, in this verse, addresses him as ‘dwijottam’, or the best amongst the Brahmins. He chose this word deliberately to address his teacher. The reason for this was that Dronacharya was not really a warrior by profession; he was a teacher of military science. Duryodhan, due to his deceitful nature, thought that Dronacharya might be like him too and would not fight against the Pandavas with full force. Therefore he used flattery to bring a positive response from the Acharya and in the process he betrayed his real scepticism.

Doubting the loyalty of Dronacharya, Duryodhan calls him ‘dwijottam’, reminding him that if he did not fight to the fullest in the field, he would be nothing more than a greedy Brahmin, enjoying the pleasures of the palace of Duryodhan.

Having demeaned Dronacharya to his heart’s desire, Duryodhan now looked to boost his own morale as well as that of his teacher. He therefore, started recounting the fact that his army was filled with such great generals leading whom would be a great achievement for Dronacharya.

The above explanation of the verse shows Duryodhan’s manipulative thinking wherein he addresses his childhood Guru in a tone of misplaced pride which is highly arrogant.  Ultimately this false ego of Duryodhan’s led to his downfall in the Mahabharata.

The Annakut festival was celebrated throughout Braj with much grandeur as it is considered a very important festival. Ages ago, on this day, Lord Krishna had lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger and saved the people from the tirade of rain and thunder being directed their way by Lord Indra, thus defeating Lord Indra. During this festival, literally mountains of food are offered to Shri Krishna in the form of Govardhan Hill. It is believed that Govardhan Maharaj always accepts offerings of food made to him at any point of time. Therefore, many temples are continuing to offer huge amounts of food as a kind of extended “Annakut” until Kartik Purnima, which will be celebrated on the 4^th of November this year. One such “extended” Annakut festival was celebrated recently at the Shri Radha-Madhav temple, also known as Jaipur Mandir.

The festival, which was organized by the government of Rajasthan, featured an offering of 56 different types of food (chhappan bhog).  In the evening, a bhajan sandhya was held, with songs depicting Shri Radha and Krishna’s leela.  A true jewel of Vrindavan, the Jaipur Mandir is under the care of the Rajasthan Devasthan Vibhag. Located on the Mathura Road, the grand sandstone temple was built by the king of Jaipur, Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II. Jaipur Mandir recently celebrated its 100^th anniversary.

The RDV plans to develop the temple grounds, including increased greenery and offering Rajasthani cultural items for purchase. The department has also expressed hope that the temple may one day be named a World Heritage Site.

Puri’s Ratha Yatra is a spectacle to watch and participate in for Krishna devotees from all over India and abroad. Recently, people in Vrindavan witnessed a similar grand procession in the holy month of Kartik. As is well known, Ratha Yatra is an ancient festival of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa. This year the Rath Yatra in Puri was charged with much spiritual excitement. The reason for this was that this year was the Nabakalebar Rath Yatra, where Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra were given a new avatar after a span of 19 years! Today, Ratha Yatra is celebrated by ISKCON devotees in countries around the world.

On the cherished day, in Vrindavan, after maha-abhishek and aarti in the morning, Jagannath, Baldev and Subhadra Devi were seated on a float and taken on a tour of the city. ISKCON devotees danced and sang the Holy Name, while others swept the streets in front of the carts, making sure they sparkled before the Lord passed by on his chariot. The ladies of the temple made rangoli designs on the streets to welcome him. Devotees from all over the world, who were visiting Vrindavan for Kartik, attended the function. Beginning at Shri Krishna Sharanam on Chhatikara road, the procession passed by Prem Mandir, ISKCON, Vidyapeeth Chaurah and Atalla Chungi before returning to ISKCON via the Parikrama Marg. While the holy chariot moved through the various lanes of the temple town, it was a grand sight to behold as the purity and holiness poured into hearts of people around.
